High school football coaches are notorious for exaggerating the dimensions of their players to put a little scare into the enemy.

That might be the case at Timberline High, where Anthony Cheney Jr. is generously listed at 5-feet, 9-inches tall and 135 pounds. But Cheney and his backfield cohort Quinton Sison, who was no monster either, posted 350 yards between them on the ground on the way to Timberline’s 34-20, Friday night victory over Enumclaw High at Pete’s Pool.

Timberline quarterback Kevin Russell rifled a perfect 15-yard dart that hit Sison in stride over the middle and Sison carried the pigskin the rest of the way to break the scoring ice with a 28-yard touchdown.

Enumclaw answered almost immediately, when fleet-footed senior Andy Holdener sprinted 72 yards and then tacked on the PAT to knot the score at seven.

Before intermission, Sison scored on another passing play and Cheney zipped into Enumclaw’s end zone from 22 yards out to put Timberline up 21-7.

The Hornets didn’t want to disappoint the home crowd, so they offered a tandem of electrifying touchdowns.

Midway through the third quarter, Enumclaw senior signal-caller Dylan Podolak, who went 12-for-23 passing for more than 200 yards, connected with tight end Tyler Carlson on a 40-yard catch and run to bring Enumclaw to within seven points after Holdener booted his second extra point.

The scoring grab by Carlson was his fourth of the young season and the Hornets appeared to be hitting their stride. Timberline retaliated when Cheney took off on a 63-yard gallop, but the kick went awry and Enumclaw was down by 13 points.

EHS tailback Marcus Joshlin hauled in a 15-yard aerial from Podolak and shook off several would-be tacklers for a 78-yard touchdown.

Enumclaw had choice but to go for the two-point conversion, which failed.

Timberline then put together a time-consuming, fourth-period scoring drive, capped off by Sison’s touchdown.

Enumclaw will welcome Capital High at 7 p.m. Friday.
