Owners of the new businesses strive to be unique, but few pull off the feat quite as well as the owner of Bob’s Skate Shop. Bob Beach, a 16-year-old White River High student, is the new tenant at 729 1/2 Main St. in Buckley. The sophomore proprietor opened his doors in early April and has high hopes of cornering business in town once the new skate park opens early this summer.
Friday’s 3-2 win over Kentridge moved the Enumclaw High girls tennis team one step closer to the South Puget Sound League North Division title.

Enumclaw High School can add one more sport to its long résumé of state tournament participants. The Hornets girls water polo team is representing the Plateau at the state championships starting Friday at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way. That’s a first for the school, which is in only its second year of competition. “It’s really a great deal,” said George Jaquette, Hornets coach. “To go from nowhere to being pretty good is neat.”
The White River girls tennis team clinched at least a tie for the Pierce County League championship with three victories last week. The Hornets downed North Mason on Friday and Washington twice. The wins gave White River 31 points in the PCL. The Hornets could have clinched sole possession of their first league championship since 1965 with a tie or win Monday (after press time) over Fife.

Sam LaFromboise was honored last week at a reception by the First National Bank of Enumclaw on his 85th birthday. Mr. LaFromboise is a former president of the bank, from 1941 to 1966. He began working at the bank in 1916 when he was about 16.
The Buckley Bicycle Rodeo held April 27 was a big success, especially for Matt Larson, Dennis Loomis and Steve Carney, who each won a BMX bike courtesy of the Buckley Fire Department, the Buckley Police Department, Gamblin Motors and the Carnation Country Store.

Fred Giusiano, elementary school principal at Carbonado, is just proud of the performance of his pupils on May 3 when the school participated in the nation-wide Civil Defense problem of survival. “The problem was successfully solved in that the youngsters carried out their assignments in every detail as if the alert was the real thing,” Giusiano said.

The Naches Pass High-way will be opened to travel in about two weeks. It is expected that last minute snow drifts and slides will be out of the way by May 22.
Possibility of construction of the White River dam loomed larger this week with the endorsement of the Rivers and Harbors Committee in Congress in Washington, D.C.
Next Sunday the Avalon Theatre will feature a personal appearance tour of the internationally famous Crockett Family, radio stars from Hollywood, at 2 p.m.
Announcing this week the installation of a splendid new loud speaker system, the Farmers’ Picnic Association completed final arrangements for their season’s opening dance May 11.
At the Avalon Theatre: “Ruggles of Red Gap,” “The Scarlet Pimpernal” and Jimmie Durante in “Carnival.”
