Friday’s 16-10 win over Peninsula was a strong finish to the Enumclaw High boys water polo regular season, but the Hornets aren’t finished yet.
Thursday, EHS faces No. 2 Curtis in the opening round of the state water polo tournament. Tipoff is 3:30 p.m. at Rogers High in Puyallup. Play continues Friday and Saturday.
Against Peninsula, Garrett Hall finished the night with 10 goals. He and fellow seniors Travis Culp, Will Skelley, Zach Petersen, Cory Larsen and Josh Musick took the starting whistle. Musick, thanks to junior Braden Dedrick, started in the field rather than his usual spot in goal.
Peninsula roared out of the gate with five goals in the opening period, before Hall could answer with two and Musick added another, one of two for the night for him.
EHS outscored the Seahawks 7-4 in the next two quarters and edged Peninsula 10-9 entering the final quarter. The fourth quarter was all Enumclaw, led by Hall’s four goals, and a goal each by Will Cooper and Logan Ross.
Travis Culp and Skelley also each scored in the win.
The Hornets closed out league play Oct. 26 with a 10-8 win over Auburn Riverside. The Hornets finished with a league record of 9-3 for third place in the East Division of the Puget Sound Water Polo League.
Hornet Bennon VanHoof scored in the first minute and the Ravens answered, but Travis Culp put EHS ahead for good with a goal late in the first quarter.
VanHoof and Hall combined for seven more goals by the third quarter.
Riverside rallied in the final quarter, scoring five, but couldn’t make up the Hornet lead. Mason Culp added an insurance goal in the fourth quarter.
