A close race for a seat on the Enumclaw School Board was settled the morning of Dec. 16, when King County Elections certified the results of four mandatory recounts.
State law directs when races are close enough to trigger mandatory recounts and there were four such instances following the Dec. 8 general election. One race required a machine recount and three – including the school board race – required a manual recount.
The recount did not change the initial election outcome, as Tina McGann was officially declared the winner of the campaign for a Director District 4 post on the school board. The person holding that seat represents the northern portion of the Enumclaw School District, including Black Diamond.
McGann had initially appeared to be the winner, holding a slim nine-vote lead on election night. She picked up an additional two votes during the recount.
In the end, Peterson finished with 3,142 votes and McGann’s winning total was 3,153. There were 24 write-in votes.
