Wrestlers from Bonney Lake and Enumclawhoisted championship trophies Saturday, the final day of the 3A Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome.
The annual state wrestling tournament, which has been throwing mats out since 1923, began Friday and wrapped up with the final rounds Saturday evening.
Bonney Lake took third as a team with 117 points, moving up from its ninth place finish last year. The Panthers featured two state champions.
Enumclaw tied for fifth with 93 points. The Hornets also brought home two state champs.
Sumner took 10th in the state with 65 points.
In the 2A class the White River boys took 12th with 46.5 points.
On the girls side of Mat Classic, White River took 21st with 29 points. The Panthers were 59th with 10 points and Enumclaw was 64th with nine.
Enumclaw
Senior Kyle Opland brought home the 120-pound title for the Hornets. In the championship round he took a 9-4 decision over Sidat Kanyi from Edmonds-Woodway. He took third last year in the 113-pound division.
Coach Adam Eilers said Opland worked very hard all season and his effort showed up on the championship mat.
The Hornets’ second title came in the 132-pound division. Jake Treece beat Gavin Rork from Arlington with a 9-0 decision. Treece took second last season at 126 losing to Hunter Haney from Enumclaw. Treece is a junior and has a chance next season to become a two-time state champion.
Placing in the top eight for Enumclaw were Quinton Southcott, 138 at third, Kione Gill taking second at 182.
Bonney Lake
Brandon Kaylor took his second consecutive 106-pound crown for the Panthers, beating Blake Haney from Mount Spokane High with a 6-3 decision.
After the match Kaylor said his drive for the 2016 title was, “more difficult this year. I felt the pressure but I was driven to succeed. I think that’s why I prevailed.”
He beat Riley Gurr from Kamiakin last year 9-7 as a freshman. The sophomore has a shot to become a four-time champ.
At 145 senior Avery Meyer brought home the championship title. He pinned Dylan Foley from Auburn Mountainview at 4 minutes, 14 seconds. Last year Meyer took second in the weight class, but this year was gold.
Also placing in the top eight for the Panthers was Brenden Chaowanapibool, sixth at 106; Mason Sabin, fifth at 126; Zach Koeller, third at 152; Keegan Dorsey, fourth at 170; and Jason Day, eighth at 182.
White River
The Hornet boys wrestling team placed four in the top eight in state.
Freshman Max Wheeler took third in the 106-pound class and sophomore Ryan Redford wrestled at 132 and took fifth.
Nathan Moore placed third at 138 and Jack Ervien was eighth at 145. Both are freshman.
Girls
Junior Erin Redford with White River took third in the 130-pound class at the Mat Classic. She took third last year at 125.
Jacey Linder, a junior, took fifth at 190.
For Enumclaw, Alexandra Puzon was seventh at 100 pounds.
Dreakeanna Adair wrestled for the Panthers. The sophomore took sixth at 190.
Sumner
The Spartans had five wrestlers place in the top eight at Mat Classic.
Trace Fischlin and Josiah Schliesman were the top finishers for Sumner. Fischlin took fourth at 152 pounds and Schliesman was fourth at 182.
CJ Richard took sixth at 113, Marcus Peterson was sixth at 120 and Tucker Wooding came in seventh at 132.
