The Enumclaw boys water polo team opened play with two nonleague games and finished with a jamboree Saturday.
The Hornets pulled off a 14-11 win over Puyallup Thursday at the Vikings’ home pool. Both teams went scoreless in the first three minutes of the game. Thomas Petersen got EHS on the board first. The two teams traded scores, tying at three going into the second quarter. The Hornets outscored the Vikings 3-0 in the second period for a 6-3 advantage at halftime.
The two teams played even through the third period, giving Enumclaw an 8-5 lead after three quarters. During the final quarter, both teams showed some fatigue on defense, with each team tallying six goals in the final period. EHS’s Bennon VanHoof scored four of his game-high nine goals in the final period.
Petersen finished the night with three goals. Gabe Sales and Mason Culp each added one.
Friday, the Hornets lost to Rogers 17-11 in the Rams’ pool.
Rogers dominated the game early, taking an 8-0 lead in the opening period. The Hornets rallied, outscoring the Rams 4-1 in the third quarter and playing even through the final quarter.
VanHoof led EHS with six goals. Petersen scored three and Mason Culp added two.
The Hornets went 3-1 at the Wilson Jamboree in Tacoma. Their lone loss was to defending state champion Curtis, 8-5.
EHS’s wins were over Rogers, 10-2; Peninsula, 10-9; and Lakes, 12-6.
The Hornets travel to Covington Thursday to face Kentridge at 9 p.m.
