Chinook fastpitch qualifies for state
The Chinook Little League 9- and 10-year-old girls fastpitch all stars won the District 10 championship Thursday with a 12-1 victory over Tahoma at Federal Way National Complex. The team went 4-0 during the series. The all-stars now head to Spokane for the state tournament July 18.
The team is managed by Sean Dunn with coaches Joel Ledbetter and Chris Meyer.
Wolverine football, cheer host camp
Wolverine Junior Football and Cheer invites all kids ages 7 to 14 for football and 7 to 15 for cheer to three days of fun July 23 through 25 at Thunder Mountain Middle School in Enumclaw. Learn football and cheer fundamentals or improve skills. The final day is fun competition for all levels with prizes and ends with a barbecue. The cost is $40. Enumclaw High earns WIAA honor
The Wells Fargo Scholastic Cup is awarded to schools that compile the highest point total based on participation and finish at the state championships along with rank, among the top eight, in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Academic State Championships for each sport.
Schools receive Wells Fargo Scholastic Cup points for displaying outstanding sportsmanship throughout the school year. Schools with no more than one student or coach ejection in all varsity sports for the school year receive 25 points.
Enumclaw High finished 10th in the 3A classification for the 2008-09 school year. Mercer Island was the Wells Fargo Scholastic Cup winner with 1,975 points, followed by Bellevue, Lakeside-Seattle, West Valley-Yakima, Columbia River, Seattle Prep, Union, Bainbridge and Holy Names.
EHS’s 10th-place finish was the top among West Central District with 605 points, followed by Capital, 525, Kennedy, 480, Peninsula, 465, Mount Rainier, 365, Yelm, 305, Lakes, 275 and Auburn Mountainview, 265. Bonney Lake finished with 165 points. Sumner tallied 135 and White River, 75.
Stinnett finishes seventh at invite
Bonney Lake High’s Veronica Stinnett placed seventh at the Adidas Golden West Invitational June 13 at Folsom High in Folsom, Calif.
Stinnett ran a personal-best of 2 minutes, 16.16 seconds in the 800-meter run and competed against the top high school runners in the nation. She was four seconds behind the winner.
Stinnett has cut eight seconds off her 800 time since last month.
Lee season kicks off with four-way tie
The Lee Golf Tournament kicked off with a four-team tie at 2-under par Thursday night on the Enumclaw Golf Course. The teams were: Don Schnoor, Dave Boyovich, Debbie Fornalski and Theresa McBride; Tim Maripodi, Lloyd Hipp, Sheila Shannon and Stan Fornalski; Joe Chaussee, Patsy Parkhurst, Vern Walker and Betty French; and Dan Winkel, Linda Hiffman, Mark Sims and Dana Bass.
Soccer club raises money for cancer
As part of a year-long community service initiative, Washington Premier Futbol Club, which involves many Plateau-area families, joined forces with the nonprofit corporation Athena Partners and 41 foodservice businesses to raise awareness and money for breast and other women’s cancers. A check was presented to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center during the June 13 Rainier Challenge soccer event in Puyallup. Money was also raised for a student athlete scholarship.
The foodservice businesses donated $20,000 to the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center on behalf of Athena and WPFC. The scholarship fund begins with a $5,000 award for the 2009-10 school year. The Athena Scholarship will be awarded to one or more WPFC high school seniors and will be based on community service and involvement, academic excellence, athletic achievement and sportsmanship.
“WPFC is built upon the combined traditions of F.C. Royals and F.C. United, which share a rich history of serving individuals and charitable organizations in our community,” WPFC President Charlie Dent said. “Breast cancer has affected every one of us in one way or another,” said Glenn Adams, WRFC vice president of community development.

Averill, Heneford named scholars
The Collegiate Water Polo Association named two Plateau-area athletes to the Scholar-Athlete Team for the 2008-09 academic year.
Elise Averill, a 2005 Enumclaw High School graduate, and Sarah Henneford, a 2005 Sumner High School graduate, were honored with the award by maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or better throughout the year.
Averill and Henneford were captains on the Western Washington University women’s water polo team and finished their fourth year of play with the Vikings. Both played for their high school teams for four years and were team captains during their senior seasons.
Averill is the daughter of Bob Averill of Enumclaw and Claudia Johns of Kent. She graduated from Western June 13 with a degree in exercise and sports science, specializing in prephysical therapy. Henneford is the daughter of Dennis and Kathy Henneford of Sumner. She will graduate in 2010 with a degree in environmental science.
