Spurred by two-time champion Marcus Dickson and a just-miss, second-place finish in the 4×400 relay, the White River High boys team took sixth-place honors at the state Class 2A track and field meet.The weekend meet was staged at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma.Dickson, a junior, captured top honors in both the 800 and 1,600 meter races. He clocked times of 1 minute, 54.83 seconds in the 800 and 4:17.38 in the longer distance.Dickson also ran the anchor leg in the 4×400, a controversial race that resulted in a couple of protests being filed. In the end, the Hornet foursome of Anthony Dove, Devin Liebel, Josh Miller and Dickson placed second, their time of 3:24.76 just one one-hundredth of a second behind Lynden.Austin May had run the third leg in the relay preliminary round, sending the Hornets into the finals.The White River boys also received points from sophomore Liebel, who finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.08, and Austin Shirey, who was eighth in the pole vault, clearing 13 meet.Liebel had also qualified for state in the 110-meter hurdles, but did not place high enough to earn team points. The same was true for Dove, who had earned a state berth in the 400 meters.On the girls side of things, junior Lauryn Wate finished seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.7 and was ninth in the 1,600 meters.Junior Kelly Coyle cleared 9-6 to place eighth in the pole vault.Also competing at state, but failing to crack the top eight, were Alysa Aashiem, who placed 11th in the javelin, and freshman Jade Crawford, who wound up 13th in the 100 meters.
