It took 10 innings and five different pitchers, but Enumclaw High’s baseball crew prevailed at around 11 p.m. Saturday, winning 8-7 over the Seamount League’s highly-touted Mount Rainier, regarded by many as the No. 1 Class 3A squad in the state.

Enumclaw made an immediate sham of Rams’ status, leading 6-1 after three innings thanks to a plethora of bases on balls, stolen bases, hit batters, wild pitches, errors and a few timely base knocks.

The Hornet advantage was helped by starting pitcher Levi Goodin.

Goodin’s reign as king of the hill ended in the fourth inning and a new EHS hurler was greeted by the Rams’ Gio Bonafacio, who crushed a three-run round-tripper.

Two innings and two EHS pitchers later, the Hornets began to fade, behind 7-6 going into the top of the sixth stanza.

Cody Hughes took care of the deficit, leading off the sixth inning with a solo home run.

Enumclaw received a boost from D.J. Hitch, who pitched a successful seventh inning before giving way to Michael Lucarelli in the eighth.

Enumclaw manufactured the winning run in the top of the 10th inning, when Hughes worked the Ram pitcher to a full count and then tabulated his third free pass of the night.

Hughes was bunted to second by designated hitter Kailen Bickler, reached third on a Kyle Baumgartner sacrifice fly and scored when Eric Koenig put a ball into play along the first base line and the Ram first baseman promptly dropped the ball as Koenig brushed him inadvertently.

Enumclaw played its second playoff contest Tuesday night when it tangled with North Kitsap bunch on one of South Hill’s Heritage Complex diamonds.
