Thursday proved mostly kind to the White River High track and field crew, which battled Lakes High and Bonney Lake in South Puget Sound League 3A double-dual action.

The Hornets boys emerged with a pair of easy victories, defeating Lakes 95-49 and Bonney Lake 102-43. The Hornet girls downed the Lancers 91-49 but dropped a heartbreaker to the Panthers, falling 75-74.

Coach Jerry Scheidt was particularly pleased with his girls’ team, which hadn’t won a league dual meet for nine years.

Highlights for the Hornet boys, Scheidt said, included victorious performances by Matt Dickson, who clocked a time of 2 minutes, 4.32 seconds in the 800 meters; Austin Shirey, who cleared 11 feet in the pole vault; Grant Peckham, who won the shot put with a toss of 45 feet; and Todd Payne-Walsh, who three the javelin 141-6.

Other noteworthy efforts included second-place showings by Marcus Dickson in the 800 meters; Blake Halvorson in the javelin; Aaron Toman in the pole vault and Hunter Chadwick in the triple jump. Taking third-place honors were Collin Green in the 100 meters; Evan Mays-Scriven in the pole vault; and Blake Tidwell in the long jump.

Among the top performers for the Hornet girls was Carley McCutchen, who won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.42, breaking her own school record in the process. She added a second-place finish in the high jump.

A two-time winner for the Hornets was Alysa Aashiem, who threw the javelin 89-8 and cleared 7-0 in the pole vault.

Kristine Brons finished in 27.52 to win the 200 meters, leading a Hornet sweep that included Cassidy France in second place and Amy Brons in third.

Saturday, the Hornet crew traveled to the South Kitsap Invitational. Competing against 15 other teams, the White River boys placed third and the girls were eighth.

Green won the 400 meters with a time of 50.6. Placing second were Tidwell in thelong jump, Shirey in the pole vault and the 1,600-meter relay team consisting of the Green brothers, Collin and Kramer, and the Dickson brothers, Marcus and Matt.

The top performance for the White River girls came from McCutchen, who finished second in the 300-meter hurdles.

The Hornets have another double-dual meet Thursday, traveling to Franklin Pierce to take on the host Cardinals and the Peninsula Seahawks.
