Start with a healthy turnout; add a veteran coach and mix in a few returning letterwinners and it’s the recipe for a successful tennis season for Enumclaw.

Coach Adam Ihde has been stirring things up these past weeks by trying a number of doubles pairings and singles combinations.

“I’m having a hard time coming up with a lineup,” Ihde said. “In the past there have been clear-cut ability levels.” He said this group is more evenly matched.

“I have very few players that just play tennis,” he said. “The heart of the varsity is made up of baseball players, basketball players and soccer players. There are no year-round players here. We don’t have a racquet club nearby to be a powerhouse.”

Two seniors do stand out – Dan Milat and Tyler McCarthy. McCarthy advanced to postseason play last year with doubles partner Levi Goodin.

Also returning to the varsity roster are Landon Berry and 6-foot-2 Anthony Chynoweth, who Ihde said, “is well suited for doubles. His height makes it hard to get anything past him at the net.”

EHS starts the season with White River at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.
