Brown brings
message to EHS
A presentation by national award-winning speaker Bruce Brown on the role of parents in athletics is planned for 7 p.m. March 2 in the Enumclaw High School auditorium.
Brown gives a straightforward message to parents and coaches about how adults can help improve student athletic performance, create good memories and demonstrate respect from the perspective of young people.
Brown, a 2008 John Wooden Wall of Honor recipient, has presented to more than 400,000 people since 2002. He has been a teacher and coach at the junior high, high school, junior college and college level for 35 years.
Also the 2002 NAIA National Athletic Director of the Year, Brown has written 11 books and 13 coaching booklets and produced 12 instructional and character-based coaching DVDs.
Enumclaw High Athletic Director Tim Tubbs is encouraging coaches and parents of middle and high school athletes to be a part of the free event.
Schwartz earns fifth in all-around
Brianna Schwartz (Bonney Lake/Sumner High) finished fifth in the all-around competition with a score of 37.675 as Seattle Pacific gymnastics team totaled a season-best team score and a third-place finish in a tri-meet at Illinois-Chicago Friday.
Schwartz led the vault honors (9.60) and tied for third place on bars with a score of 9.775 that was the best this season for an SPU gymnast.
The Falcons remain on the road next week for a dual meet at the University of California at Davis, Friday. The next home meet for the SPU gymnasts is Tuesday against Eastern Michigan. The competition starts at 7 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion.
Grads to play in water polo tourney
The University of Washington will host a tournament for the Northwest Division of the Women’s Collegiate Water Polo Association Saturday and Sunday at Curtis High School. Teams from the University of Washington, University of Oregon, Western Washington University, Western Oregon University and Oregon State University will be playing.
Western Washington features graduates from Enumclaw and Sumner.
Auburn Riverside hosts polo camp
The Auburn Riverside Water Polo Team will host a water polo camp Feb. 27 through March 1 at the Auburn pool. Skills and techniques will be taught by former U.S. National Team member Peter Sabbatini and assistant national youth coach Edwin Barrera.
The camp is designed for high school athletes of all abilities, and will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Feb. 27, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 28, and 9 a.m. to noon March 1. The cost is $75 for all three days.

Equestrian team ready for action
The Enumclaw High School equestrian team, pictured above with Enumclaw Mayor John Wise, hosted its first invitational fun show at the Enumclaw Expo Center grounds recently. More than 50 individuals competed in various hunt seat, saddle seat and stock seat classes. There are three sanctioned shows this spring where the Enumclaw equestrian team will compete against other western Washington teams, finishing with a statewide competition in Pasco, Wash., in May. The show was a fundraiser for the team. Local business sponsors included The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association of Washington, Starbucks, SLM Training Stables and Seattle Sun Tan.
Wolverine football registration coming
Wolverine Football and Cheer registration is coming soon. Athletes interested in joining the program should watch for more information in the newspaper and flyers that will be sent home with students through the schools. Information is also available at the team’s Web site, www.wolverinejuniorfootball.com.
Coed flag football registration Feb. 28
Boys and girls in first through eighth grades can register for the upcoming coed flag football season, sponsored by the Valley Football and Cheerleading Association.
Registration is from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Feb. 28 at Sumner High School. Only a limited number of spots are available, 180 for each division. Registration forms can be printed from the Web site, www.valleywolfpackfootball.com.
Division 1 is for first- through third-graders; Division 2 is for grades four and five; and Division 3 is sixth through eighth. Each team is guaranteed eight games.
The first game will be on March 1 and the final game is on March 29. Games are Saturday and Sunday at the Bonney Lake High School stadium.
Division 1 games are between 1 and 3 p.m., Division 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Division 3 from 9 to 11 a.m.
Everyone who signs up goes into a draft and will be assigned to a team. Requests for friends to be on the same teams will not be accepted.
Following registration, conditioning drills are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cost for participating is $50 per player.
