The 37th annual Buckley Log Show gets rolling with a parade at 10 a.m.

The 2010 grand marshal is Rebecca Frisby of Frisby Farms Nursery and Gifts. Frisby is a longtime member of the Chamber of Commerce and her nursery provides the flowers for the hanging basket program. In the chamber, she has served as secretary, president, vice president and in her current role as a director.

Frisby will ride in a collectible car with Mayor Pat Johnson, both of whom will toss candy to spectators as they make their way along the parade route.

Last year’s parade attracted 66 participants with more than 90 floats. The march can be seen along Main Street from “C” Street to River Avenue. Five awards will be presented: Best Logging truck, Best Kids’ Entry, Best Float, Best Low Boy and Best Miscellaneous Truck.

Vendors will line River Avenue throughout the weekend to sell food, merchandise and Log Show memorabilia. Those wishing to participate in the parade or as a vendor can register through 5 p.m. Friday. Call the Buckley Chamber of Commerce at 360-829-0975 for information.

The Log Show begins two days of events at noon Saturday. It’s free to all spectators and takes place on the Buckley Log Show Grounds between River Avenue and state Route 410.

Don’t count on arriving at a certain time to catch a favorite event: the precise time competitions are staged will depend on the length of time each event takes to finish.

Spectators can expect to see a slew of action-packed events like the ax throw, in which contestants throw a two pound, 20-inches-or-longer, double-sided ax at a 4-inch target 20 feet away. Jake Nicholas took first place last year with 25 points.

Another popular event is the speed climb – a race to the top of a 75-foot spar pole. Tyson Hanson was 2009’s first place winner at 36.04 seconds.

In the single bucking competition, contestants use a cross-cut saw to cut through a 10-inch alder log as fast as possible. Jeff Fetter took first with 45.16 seconds.

Sunday-only competitions will include the wrapper toss, obstacle choker, log rolling and crew team relay.

Awards will be presented at the conclusion of the show including Bull of the Woods Bob Britschgi.

The 2010 Best All-Around Logger will also be named. Last year that honor went to Tyson Hanson. Hanson had previously shared the title with Jeff Carlson in 2007.
