Behind the fourth-place finish of Tyler Salsbury and the 12th-place finish of Tim Livermore, Enumclaw High earned a runner-up finish at the 3A state boys golf tournament in Spokane.The Hornets’ finish ties the second-best in school history and was hot on the heels of last season’s third-place trophy. The Hornets won the state title in 1982 and placed second in 1984 and 1985. Second place is the highest finish for the boys team since the state went to the individual qualifying format in 1990. “It was a little bit of a disappointment,” coach Bob Kilmer admitted about the runner-up finish, “because the boys really wanted to win the tournament.”The Hornets were in the running. After Day 1, Kilmer said, the team was two strokes ahead, but found itself a couple of swings short and a couple of putts shy in the end.”That’s golf,” Kilmer said. “It will always come down to one swing or one shot.”The kids represented the school and the community well and we’re proud of them.”Seattle Prep won the crown with 87 points. Enumclaw was not far behind with 74. Mercer Island captured third with 69.50.Salsbury and Livermore were tied for fifth with matching 1-under-par 71s after the first round at MeadowWood Golf Course. Salsbury, a junior, shot a 2-under par 70 for the second round, but couldn’t catch title winner Eric Gravbrot of West Valley who won it with a first-round 69 and second-day 68 for 137.It was a tight race for the title. The top four golfers were within four strokes.Livermore finished Day 2 at 76 for a two-day total of 147 for his top individual state finish. The Hornets’ team trophy was the third for Livermore during his EHS career. The senior plans to continue play at Pacific Lutheran University.Fellow Hornets Chase Dolliver and Colton McCluskey, juniors, closed out at 156 and 157, respectively.David Smith, also a junior, missed the Day 2 cut, by one stroke, with an 80.

The LadiesThe Lady Hornets added another Top 5 finish to their growing collection with their second-straight fourth-place finish at the 3A girls state golf tournament May 25 at the par-70 Liberty Lake Golf Course. “The girls fourth-place trophy was outstanding,” Kilmer said, noting it was the Hornets’ fifth trophy in a row.The Hornets won the 3A crown in 2008, were runner-up in 2007, third in 2009 and fourth last season.”For the senior girls that’s four state trophies,” Kilmer said.Mercer Island captured the crown with 90.50 points. Mount Spokane was second at 77. Handford was third at 71 and EHS fourth with 63.50.Senior Kelly Sweeney, who plans to play at Whitman College in the fall, was EHS’s top finisher, earning 10th with a two-day total of 165, 80 for Day 1 and 85 for Day 2. Rachel Lewis of Peninsula won the title.After shooting 86 in the opening round, Hornet teammate sophomore Tiffany Wilkening carded a 90 on Day 2 to finish at 176 for 21st.Hornet senior Janie Francis finished with matching 91s for 28th.The Day 1 cutoff was 93 strokes. Senior Molly Roe finished at 95, sophomore Madeline Petellin, 100.

Class 1AEnumclaw’s Alex Howells helped lead Cascade Christian High to a second-place finish at the 1A state girls golf tournament May 25 at The Home Course in Dupont. Howells was Cascade Christian’s top finisher at 10th with a two-day stroke total of 177. She led the Cougars to the title in 2010.
