With the end of the school year approaching, the Enumclaw Youth and Family Service center has seen a drop in the number of students attending its free tutoring sessions.
“We’d like to call these last seven weeks of school crunch time,” said EYFS child and family therapist Laurel Bailey of the Village Tutors program, which also is offered at the Buckley Youth Activity Center. “Our goal is to provide a broad range of free tutoring for students K-12 desiring to improve their in-class academic performance.
“The tutoring center is great place for students to finish up final projects, get caught up on missing assignments, study for final exams, and end the year with success.”
Bailey said the tutoring center is capable of giving parents the tools needed to help their student at home. Or, some parents have taken their child to the tutoring center to work one-on-one with a tutor, which can eliminate stressful interactions at home. Parents can even volunteer to tutor other students while their own child receives tutoring.
In addition, the center has an educational case manager to assist families and students by creating a personalized academic plan for success or by attending school meetings for educational/behavioral concerns.
At both the Enumclaw and Buckley locations, activities are closed during tutoring hours to ensure an environment for academic success.
The Enumclaw center, 1356 Cole St., is open 6 to 8 p.m. with sessions Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday. In Buckley, the location is 251 River Ave., and sessions run from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays for those in kindergarten through eighth grade and Tuesday/Thursday for secondary students.
School Supplies
EYFS is also looking ahead to fall and collecting school supplies for its backpack program for children in need. The majority of the supplies are donated and the center is ready to start collecting donations from the community.
Needed donations include tissue boxes, scissors, erasers, pencil sharpeners, pencils, pocket calculators, markers, colored pencils, color crayons, glue sticks, glue bottles, blue/black/red pens, highlighters, composition notebooks, spiral notebooks – wide and college ruled – dividers, three-ring binders and backpacks.
