The Enumclaw High hoop programs experienced mixed success Thursday night when squaring off against the Peninsula Seahawks.

In a pair of South Puget Sound League 3A tussles, the Hornet girls won 63-42 on their home court while the EHS boys fell short on the road, losing 56-51.

Enumclaw’s girls used a third-quarter spurt to gain a healthy advantage over the visitors from the Key Peninsula. The Hornets had led 12-10 after eight minutes of play and 28-23 at halftime, but stretched the margin by outscoring the Seahawks 20-7 in the third frame. The remaining eight minutes were anticlimactic as the EHS squad coasted to the 21-point victory.

Enumclaw was paced by Hayley Sonneson’s 23 points. She was particularly productive during the decisive third quarter, scoring 11 of her game-high points. Teammate Kylie Rademacher contributed 10 points to the win.

The third quarter also was a turning point in the boys game in Purdy.

Enumclaw jumped on top 12-8 by the end of the first period and took a 25-19 advantage into the locker room at halftime. The good times fell apart when teams returned to the court, as Peninsula outscored EHS 19-9, grabbing a lead that would not be relinquished.

Three Hornet boys landed in double figures, with Zac Webb leading the way with 13 points. Scotty Garvin chipped in with 12 and Josh Erickson added 10.

The Enumclaw High girls improved to 3-1 in SPSL 3A play with Thursday’s win, while the Hornet boys dropped to 1-3.
