Plateau athletes off to national tourney
Twenty-nine Mount Rainier View Tae Kwon Do competitors, between the ages of 4 and 35, who recently competed in the Washington State regional tournament, qualified for the United States National Championships scheduled for June 25 through June 27 in Kelso, Wash.
The national championships take place every two years across the country. This year, Kelso will host the tournament.

Wolverine football hosts barbecue
Wolverine Junior Football and Cheer is hosting a barbecue and registration event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 30 at the Buckley Community Hall. This is an opportunity for players to meet the coaches and learn more about the Wolverines. Football players are divided into five teams by age and weight. Full pads and uniforms are provided under strict safety regulations. Football is open from ages 7 to 14 years old and no tryouts are necessary. Teams are filling up fast. There is a waiting list only for the 89er team. Cheer has limited spaces available and is open to girls from 7 to 15 years old; no tryouts necessary. Salsbury takes junior golf title
Tyler Salsbury won the Northwest Junior Golf Tour’s Peninsula Junior Open ninth- and 10th-grade division April 26, leading a strong performance by a number of Enumclaw High golfers.
Salsbury finished at 1-over-par 73 for the opening 18 holes at Port Ludlow Golf Resort April 25 and finished up with a strong 2-over performance for the final nine of 18 holes the following day at White Horse Golf Course in Kingston, Wash. He won his division with a 7-over par total of 151.
Hornet teammate Jake Erickson finished in a three-way tie for seventh in the boys 11th- and 12th-grade division with a 10-over par total, 154 strokes, for the two days. Erickson finished at 3-over par 75 for the first day at Port Ludlow and closed out the final nine on Day 2 of competition at White Horse with a 1-over par performance.
After a 2-over par start to the tournament, Jordan Beals, also an EHS player, finished seven strokes behind Erickson for 11th. Teddy Sherwood rounded out the local finishers at 23rd.
On the girls’ side, Enumclaw’s Tory Schreiner finished ninth in the 11th- to 12th-grade division.
Volleyball camp set at Bonney Lake
Registration is open for the Bonney Lake High School volleyball camp sponsored by the Sumner/Bonney Lake Recreation Department.
The camp is 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 2, 9 and 16 at the Bonney Lake High gymnasium for girls grades four to nine. Cost is $75 and includes a T-shirt.
BLHS coach Shirley Baker, her staff and players will conduct the camp. The youngest players will receive instruction in fundamental volleyball skills. More advanced players will build on these skills in addition to being introduced to higher levels of offensive and defensive systems.

Annual tennis camp slated
Registration is open for the Sumner/Bonney Lake Recreation Department’s annual tennis camp. The camp is June 30 to July 31 for grades three to 12.
The cost is $70 for grades 3 to 6 and $80 for middle and high school athletes, and includes a T-shirt.
Sumner High tennis coach Chris Heacox is the camp instructor. Sessions are Tuesday and Thursday with different times specified for each group and Fridays are game play days, against other teams throughout the tennis league.

Boys, girls hoop camps announced
The Sumner/Bonney Lake Recreation Department registration forms are available for the fourth annual boys and girls basketball camps is June 25-27 for ages 3 through kindergarten and grades entering one through seven.
The camp is organized by both the Sumner and Bonney Lake high school girls and boys basketball coaches and will take place at the Bonney Lake High gymnasium.Instructors will teach the fundamentals of basketball, individual improvement drills will be completed each day and daily awards will be given.
Cost is $40 for ages 3 to kindergarten and camp time is 9 to 10:15 a.m. The cost for grades one through seven is $75 and sessions are 9 a.m. to noon. Each camper will receive a custom Spartan/Panther basketball and T-shirt.

Golf tournament May 30
The Sumner/Bonney Lake Ministerial Association Challenge Scramble Golf Tournament is May 30 at the High Cedars Golf Course in Orting.
Donation is $65 and the format is a four-person scramble. There will be contest including a long drive hole, two closest to the pin holes, hole in one, tee prizes and a church team trophy. For more information, call 253-863-5101. Registration deadline is May 15.
Co-ed softball league starting up
Churches interested in completing in a coed league softball league are invited to attend a coaches meeting at 7 p.m. May 28 at Sumner Presbyterian Church, 1915 Washington St. Games will be played on two fields at Sumner Middle School on Tuesday or Thursday evenings June 16 through Aug. 4, ending with a single-elimination tournament.
