The Bonney Lake Panthers softball season ended Friday after going 1-2 in the first round of the 3A Softball State Championships.
The Panthers faced Mount Si High School in the first round beating them 14-9.
Bonney Lake scored first with two on and no outs in the first inning. A sacrifice followed by a single put two on the board for the Panthers.
Mount Si answered quickly taking the lead with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first.
The scoring continued for Bonney Lake after a lead off single in the second inning put one on.
A two-run home run regained the lead for the Panthers.
Bonney Lake scored two more in the second inning, taking the lead 6-3 over Mount Si.
A dropped pop up by Bonney Lake allows a run to score and Mount Si inches closer, down by two now.
The Panthers get the fourth inning started with a lead off triple. A walk puts runners on the corners.
Bonney Lake again adds two to its lead to end the inning 8-4 over Mount Si.
With two on and two outs in the fifth, Bonney Lake scores on a double to left center.
Mount Si hit a solo to trail Bonney Lake 9-5.
Three batters later, a three run home run brings the Wildcats within one.
Mount Si tied the game at 9 in the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh with one out Bonney Lake junior Ali Martinson battled with the pitcher and eventually won advancing to first on a walk.
A double to center put two on for the Panthers.
Mount Si was throwing an intentional walk and the pitch was too high and above the catcher, allowing a run to score. The Panthers pulled ahead 10-9.
Still with one out, a run scored for Bonney Lake and the Panthers were up by two.
Bonney Lake loaded the bases and a double cleared them with the Panthers now leading 14-9.
The Wildcats had one more chance in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to close the gap on Bonney Lake’s five point lead.
Senior pitcher Melissa Charron received the sportsmanship award following the end of the game.
With the win, the Panthers advanced to the next round where they played Shadle Park.
Bonney Lake lost that game 5-1 but wasn’t out of the tournament yet. The Panthers would play one more game Friday against Prairie.
The Panthers lost 11-2 ending its season in the third round.
