“Pack the Gym Night” set at Sumner HS

Summer High School will host “Pack the Gym Night” for Special Olympics basketball players at 7 tonight, Wednesday, in the SHS gymnasium.

According to Ann Cook, communications director, the goal is to completely fill the gym with students from Sumner and Bonney Lake high schools.

The SHS Special Olympics basketball team will face a team from Rogers High in Puyallup at 7:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., there is a skills contest for players from both schools.

Kindergarten under way

Kindergarten registration for the 2009-2010 academic year will take place throughout the Sumner School District Monday through Friday.

Students entering kindergarten must be 5 years old by Aug. 31 and may register at their local elementary school.

During registration, families should bring either a birth or hospital certificate or passport; immunization records; the child’s health history; and family contacts that include emergency information.

Some of the elementary schools offer a tuition-based full-time kindergarten program on a space-availalbe basis for those who qualify and receive additional instructions in basic skills that help prepare them for first grade.

All children enrolled in the full-time program must qualify through participation in a screening process held later in the spring.

Art show joins this year’s science fair

The annual Sumner School District Science Fair will have a new component this year.

For the first time, the middle and high school Fine Arts Department will host an art show with nearly 150 students competing for ribbon with support from the City of Sumner Arts Commission.

The event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 at Sumner High School, 1201 Wood Ave.
