When the water settled on Thursday’s Sumner-Bonney Lake high school swim meet, nine points separated the two teams with the Class 3A Bonney Lake edging their Class 2A district partner 97-86.
The Spartans won eight events, but the Panthers edged them with depth.
Sumner continued to post a number of district times including the third-place, 2-minute, 11.37-second finish by the 200-yard medley relay team of Sam Rigsby, Jobe Layton, Tanner Harrison and Neil Bateman. The Panthers – Zach Goodsell, Reed Hawkins, Cameron Gehrke and Cody Rae – won the event with a time of 2:08.04.
For Sumner, Connor Powers-Hubbard won the 200 freestyle in 1:58.57 and the 100 breaststroke.
Zane Gustafson won the 200 IM in 2:20.25.
Trent Powers won the 50 freestyle in 22.84 and the 100 butterfly in 59.97. Sam Parks was second.
Pietro Postal, who was close to posting a district 50 freestyle time, finished second in the 100 freestyle.
Powers-Hubbard, Gustafson, Postal and Powers won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Evan Quaschnik of Sumner won the diving with Bonney Lake’s Gary Flygare right behind.
Bonney Lake didn’t post any district times, but, in addition to its 200 medley relay victory, did win a number of other events.
Zach Goodsell won the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:00.73 and the 100 backstroke in 1:15.12. The Panthers finished 1-2 with Zach Bordelon second. Cody Steiert won the 500 freestyle in 5:54.46 with teammate Nathan Scott finishing second. Steiert was also second in the 200 freestyle.
Gehrke earned a second-place finish in the 200 IM, while Kyle Nadeau was second in the 50 freestyle and raced a leg of the second-place Panther 200 medley relay that also featured Bordelon, Zach Pettit and Jonah Howard.
Howard, Nadeau, Steiert and Reed Hawkins also placed wcond in the 200 freestyle relay.
Bonney Lake’s 400 freestyle relay of Scott, Rae, Goodsell and Nadeau finished second as well.
