FALL SPORTS PREVIEW 2011: Sumner’s swimmers aren’t resting on last season’s laurels

Sumner High School's girls swim team carried home a third-place state trophy and left six school records shattered in their wake at the close of the 2010 season. In South Puget Sound League 2A, they were undefeated champs. And the Spartans' 200 freestyle relay team won the school's second title.

Sumner High School’s girls swim team carried home a third-place state trophy and left six school records shattered in their wake at the close of the 2010 season. In South Puget Sound League 2A, they were undefeated champs. And the Spartans’ 200 freestyle relay team won the school’s second title.

But third-year coach Dana Powers’ girls aren’t resting on their laurels. No sooner were they out of the state tourney’s waters than they were looking toward 2011.

“It sets the bar higher for next season,” sophomore Ashley Huynh said.

Junior Sami Hendricks thought the team could perform even better in 2011.

“Next year we should be first in state,” she said.

To do so, the team will have to step up it’s already impressive game.

They have a strong roster of returning swimmers to achieve that end.

Madison Munger, Huynh and Hendricks are all returning school record setters in the 200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay.

Emma Thompson, who helped the returning three set records of 1:54.27 and 1:41.91 in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay, respectively, has graduated.

The four came out state champions in the 200 freestyle.

Munger was state champion in the 200 individual medley, posting a 2:09.57 time.

The girls have their first match against Bonney Lake High School Thursday at the Sumner pool.
