The Pierce County Council unanimously appointed Monica Butler as the newest member of the Pierce County Library System Board of Trustees. Butler, a Gig Harbor resident, replaces Allen P. Rose, whose term expires at the end of July. Butler’s first meeting with the board is Aug. 12. She will serve a five-year term.
Butler retired in 2014 from her post as the retirement director for Tacoma Employees’ Retirement System. Her past work includes 26 years with Russell Investments in various positions. She has a long history as an investment consultant to boards and as a volunteer board member of several organizations. Butler holds an MBA from New York University and a bachelor of science in nutrition from Cornell University. She is a senior fellow with the American Leadership Forum in Tacoma.
The board of trustees sets library system goals and objectives, approves budgets and contracts, sets policy, studies community needs and ensures the library meets them. Trustees are appointed by the Pierce County Executive and approved by the Pierce County Council, serving five-year terms in non-paid, volunteer positions. Other board members include Robert Allen, chair; Donna Albers, vice-chair; Linda Ishem and J.J. McCament.
