The following is from a release from the City of Bonney Lake –

Completion of the $1.8 million Prairie Ridge Booster Pump Station contract is a significant accomplishment in its own right; however, it is only the tip of the iceberg as part of a much larger $15.7 million project as shown on the attached Project History page.

The journey to secure additional water supplies for the City of Bonney Lake’s future commenced in February 2005 when the City and Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) struck an agreement for Bonney Lake to purchase up to 2 million gallons per day from TPU’s pipe line No. 1.

The city then designed and built a water main along 214th Avenue from Tapps Island to Kelly Lake Road in 2006. This 12-inch water main contract was more than three miles in length and made a temporary connection to the TPU water system with an intertie on Connell’s Prairie Road.

After searching for a location to make a permanent connection to the TPU water supply and build a Booster Pump Station, success was achieved in a unique fashion. The final result was a collaborative effort between Pierce County Public Works and the City of Bonney Lake.

The resulting agreement provided Pierce County free water for street cleaning in exchange for a land lease (in perpetuity) on which the City would build a booster pump station next to TPU’s pipeline No. 1. This site is next to the Pierce County recycling center on Prairie Ridge Drive. Water for Pierce County is supplied with a newly installed automated water dispensing station on 96th Street.

The Prairie Ridge Booster Pump Station (BPS) has been a project six years in the making with many twists and turns and ups and downs; but, as they say, “all good things come to those who wait.”

As we worked through the process of the BPS site negotiations, the city locked in another 2 MGD TPU water supply purchase through Cascade Water Alliance. Thus, the size and location of this BPS was designed and built to use 4 MGD of water when needed in the future.
