Sumner High’s boys basketball squad snapped out of its winter hibernation last week after being stunned by a woeful Steilacoom bunch 60-59 Jan. 31 on the road.
Once the Spartans shook off the grogginess, they finished the SPSL 2A regular season by defeating White River 41-34 Friday and, on Saturday, caging visiting Franklin Pierce 59-38.
Sumner finished 11-3 in league action and, since it beat White River twice, earned the No. 2 seed into postseason play.
The Spartans held White River in check Friday, as the Hornets were limited to 11-for-44 shooting from the field and 7-for-17 from the charity stripe.
Sumner next proceeded to bully the Cardinals behind balanced scoring from Joey Kendall and the DeVries twins, Dan and Dave. The three combined for 41 of the Spartans’ 59 points.
Sumner begins postseason play at 8 p.m. Friday against either Sequim or Port Angeles. The venue will be Foster High School in Tukwila.
If Sumner drops its Friday game and White River is beaten in its confrontation with either Renton or Lindbergh, there will be a rematch between Sumner and White River at 4 p.m. Saturday, also at Foster High.
