Lake Tapps woman killed, Puyallup man booked on vehicular homicide in SR 162 two-car accident

Early morning accident claim life of 65-year-old Maria Davila

A 65-year-old Lake Tapps woman was killed and Puyallup man was arrested and booked on vehicular homicide from a two-car crash on state Route 162 near 96th Avenue Thursday, Aug. 27, according to Washington State Patrol.

State troopers reported Maria C. Davila was critically injured in the crash and immediately transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma. Davila later died in the hospital as a result of her injuries.

Joseph J. Dirado was driving his 2000 Ford F150 pickup westbound on SR 162 when he crossed the center line, driving into the eastbound lanes. Dirado struck a 1991 Subaru Legacy, driven by Davila, who was traveling eastbound.

The accident happened about 5:40 a.m.

East Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and transported Dirado to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup with minor injuries. He was later released from the hospital and booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

WSP reported drug paraphernalia was found in Davila’s truck and detectives believe drugs were a factor in this preventable and devastating collision.

The roadway was closed and detours made available during a two-hour investigation. Both vehicles were transported to the Washington State Patrol bull pen as evidence.
