Bonney Lake Police Blotter, week of June 16

VEHICLE PROWL: Police on June 3 responded to a report of a vehicle prowl in the 21200 block of 82nd Avenue East, where someone broke the rear passenger window of a resident’s truck and stole the stereo out of the vehicle. Police are investigating.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY: Officers on June 4 were dispatched to the Evergreen Groundworks on state Route 410 for a report of an attempted burglary. The business owner said he arrived for the day and discovered a window was broken at the building. Police also located what appeared to be a pry mark on the outside of the missing window. The owner said nothing appeared to be missing.

VANDALISM: Police on June 3 were dispatched to Fred Meyer for a report of a juvenile caught vandalizing the back doors of the building. Store employees witnessed the juvenile writing graffiti with black marker. The juvenile was arrested and admitted to tagging the door with his “skater name.” Store security said they wanted to press charges and estimated the damage at $200. The juvenile was released to a guardian who said the youth had been arrested several times in the past few weeks for vandalism. He was also trespassed from Fred Meyer for one year.

NEGLIGENT BUT MINTY FRESH: An officer on patrol June 4 witnessed a vehicle with a license plate he was unable to read. When he attempted to catch up with the vehicle, the driver seemed to notice the cop and made a quick turn into a neighborhood. Knowing the road was a dead end, the officer waited at the entrance. Approximately two minutes later, the vehicle re-emerged and waited at the intersection for “an exceptionally long time” before pulling back out on to the street. When the officer followed the car, the driver made an abrupt turn into another neighborhood, but because he failed to use a signal, the officer activated his lights and pulled he vehicle over. Upon contact, the driver’s eyes appeared bloodshot and watery and the officer noticed the smell of intoxicants. As the officer went to his vehicle to check the driver’s records, a second officer who arrived as backup stayed near the car and watched the driver pull out a tube of toothpaste and eat some. The driver denied drinking and declined to take a portable breath test. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to the Buckley jail where he was booked for negligent driving.

MALICIOUS MISCHIEF: Police on June 4 were called to the 9500 block of Angeline Road for a report of a hit-and-run. An officer determined the damage to the resident’s vehicle was likely not caused by another car, but that the rear window appeared to have been shot out by a BB or pellet gun. The damage was estimated at $500. Police are investigating.

TEENAGE WASTELAND: Police on June 5 were dispatched to the JB Mini-Mart for a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in the lot for 20 minutes and occupied by four juveniles. When police arrived, they immediately smelled marijuana. The driver’s eyes appeared droopy, bloodshot and watery. When confronted by police, the driver admitted to using marijuana and said he had some in his pocket. One of the passengers also admitted to having marijuana and a pipe on his person. Another passenger also admitted to being the owner of a second, large glass pipe found in the car. The driver was cited for unlawful possession of marijuana. One passenger was cited for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and the other passenger was cited for possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. All were released at the scene to parents.

SHOPLIFTING: Police June 5 were dispatched to Walmart for a report of shoplifters in custody. Store security stopped an adult male and juvenile female for attempting to leave the store without paying for approximately $55 in merchandise. The female admitted to trying to steal the items and the male admitted to acting as a lookout. The juvenile was released to her parents and the case was forwarded to the juvenile prosecutor for charges. The male was cited for theft and released.

FAILURE TO REPORT: Police on June 6 performed a routine residence check on a registered sex offender and discovered the offender had moved to an new aprtment in Kent without reporting the move to authorities. Police made note of the change and forwarded papers to the Pierce County Felony Prosecutor for review and subsequent charging.

RACIST GRAFFITI: Police on June 8 were dispatched to Mountain View Middle School for a report of graffiti on a storage building at the school. During the night, someone had spray-painted on the brick walls of the shed as well as a door. The paint on the walls appeared to be gang style markings and included the letters “J F” while a swastika was painted on the shed’s door. Police are investigating.

STRONGARM ROBBERY: Officers were dispatched to Bonney Lake High School June 8 for a report that two males had been assaulted and one of them had a skateboard stolen. According to the report, the two males were approached by two subjects who demanded the skateboard. The victim refused and attempted to run past the two suspects but was tackled to the ground. The other male was able to escape. The suspects punched the victim several times in the head and then took the skateboard. The victim said the assailants looked familiar and provided descriptions to police. The skateboard is valued at $120. Police are investigating.

KNUCKLEHEAD: Police on June 9 were dispatched to Mountain View Middle School after a juvenile female student was caught with a pair of brass knuckles. The student claimed to be carrying the brass knuckles because she was afraid of getting beaten up. The brass knuckles were turned over to police, who determined them to be a dangerous weapon. The student reportedly had taken the knuckles from a friend of her parents. The student was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon on school facilities and was released to her parents.

SHOPLIFTING AND DRUGS: Officers were dispatched to Walmart June 9 for a report from store security that a woman was seen concealing merchandise before disappearing into the store bathroom for at least 30 minutes. Store security had witnessed the woman enter the store and attempt to return a lock box she was seen taking from the store earlier in the day. Her return was denied for lack of a receipt and she started going through the store concealing merchandise on her person including CDs, DVDs, three digital cameras and two memory cards and then made her way to the restroom at the front of the store, where she still was when police arrived. After sending in a female employee to ensure the suspect was the only occupant, and to protect her privacy, police entered the bathroom and requested she come out of the stall. The suspect said she was having bowel trouble and police heard the toilet flushing and sounds of packaging being rustled around. Police observed that the suspect’s feet were facing the toilet and also saw several items on the floor including prescription bottles, two energy drinks reportedly taken from a cooler near the cash register and several pieces of tissue. Police advised the suspect to stop what she was doing and exit immediately and then heard the toilet flush again. Police advised that they would enter if she refused to stop flushing the toilet. As the suspect stepped back from the toilet and flushed it again, an officer pulled himself over the stall door and observed a syringe circling the toilet bowl. As the suspect stepped out of the stall, police noticed fresh blood on her forearm and hands. Marijuana was also found in the prescription bottle and several CDs and DVDs were found in the suspect’s coat pocket. Police also recovered all three cameras, cases and both memory cards in the suspect’s purse. In addition, police located a glass pipe, a bag of methamphetermine and several oxycodone pills as well as 15 pieces of mail not addressed to the suspect. Another syringe was also found during a search. The suspect was transported to the Pierce County jail and booked for third-degree theft, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of a legend drug. At the jail, the suspect was strip searched and a loaded syringe, a glass smoking device and a lighter were found hidden in her crotch and a small measuring cup was hidden in her bra. All are consistent with drug ingestion.

FRAUD: Police were dispatched June 9 to the Bonney Lake Tavern for a report of a credit card fraud in progress. When police arrived, they were pointed to two suspects who were attempting to pay for their tab with another person’s credit card. Both appeared extremely intoxicated. One suspect initially admitted to finding the card and attempting to use it because he had no other money. Neither suspect had any currency on them. One suspect was booked for fraud while the other was discovered to have two outstanding warrants and was booked on those charges.
