For an inexperienced Sumner High fastpitch bunch, it was more baptism by fire last week.
In the only game they played, the Spartan girls hosted Franklin Pierce March 28 and lost 12-5 remaining winless at 0-5 overall.
Franklin Pierce windmiller Kelli Crawford learned Sumner’s young lineup has a selective eye at the dish. Franklin Pierce committed two errors and Crawford walked seven Spartan batters, while giving up a half dozen hits, including a single and a double by Amanda Haines.
Try as it might to choke away the league encounter, Franklin Pierce managed a dozen hits while SHS was guilty of four miscues. These two factors were instrumental in spelling the Spartan downfall.
Sumner will try to redeem itself when it hosts Clover Park today, Wednesday, and Eatonville Thursday. Both of those contests will begin 4 p.m.
