The battle for the top four spots in the South Puget Sound League 3A girls division became more complex Friday.

Bonney Lake, coming off a bye date, entered Sumner High’s gymnasium and handed the No. 10-ranked Spartans a 35-point drubbing, 76-41, before a packed house.

“The girls really played well coming off a bye,” Panther head coach Tom Ostrander said. “We’ve been struggling as of late and it was good to have a bye. It was good to have time to put things back in order.”

Brittany Kennedy started the barrage with a 3-pointer to begin the game and the Panthers never looked back.

Rani Wiegand scored seven points of her 11 points within a matter of minutes to give Bonney Lake a 10-4 lead.

Marcel Pounds, who scored a game-high 26, drilled a 3-pointer for a 16-9 lead to end the opening period.

The Panthers hit 10 3-pointers in the contest.

The Spartans, who were coming off a tough six-point loss to White River, were never able to get into the game after Bonney had a 23-9 lead on Rochelle Murray’s layup.

Bonney Lake went into the half with a 30-18 margin.

The Panthers held Sumner to less than 10 points in three of the four quarters.

“I told the girls we’ve played in an environment like this in the playoffs last season,” Ostrander said. “I told them it was time to compete. We have been playing hard, but not competing.”

In the third period, Bonney Lake outscored the Spartans 27-14 for a 57-32 advantage.

Carly Elwin came off the bench and scored 13 second-half points, while Cheyanne Clark added eight.

“This is a game we can build off,” Ostrander added.

Kaitlin King led Sumner with 20 points and Erika Olsen added seven.

With the win, Bonney Lake is tied with Sumner and Lakes for second place in the SPSL 3A standings, all with 6-2 records. White River leads the way at 7-1.

The Panthers play at Peninsula Friday in a SPSL 3A contest.
