Spartans earn fifth at Foss tourney

Although the Sumner High grapplers didn’t quite get the tournament format they were anticipating, they still fared well at the annual Foss High holiday wrestling tournament Saturday with a fifth-place finish.

Instead of picking numbers out of a hat and going with the man-on-man individual point system as has been the case in past Foss mat fests, the tourney official opted for team versus team dual action, which did not bode well for Sumner, which has a handful of experienced wrestlers, with the balance of its contingent still being a bit green.

Two Spartan senior standouts, Keiffer Comstock, 215 pounds, and Tyler Wooding, 125 pounds, each won all four of their individual matches with pins. Meanwhile, Sumner’s Matt Fierroz, Colby Grant and Matthew Wilson won all of their matches, with Alex Bricker, 152 pounds, chipping in a tandem of 35-second pins.

Sumner’s undoing was that it had to forfeit in five different weight classes due to illness, injuries, holiday vacations and other issues.

Sumner will travel to Timberline High Jan. 7 to engage in its next dual match and Jan. 8 will host Lakes at 7 p.m. as the league slate kicks in again.
