The Bonney Lake High boys basketball team saw its overall record drop to 2-2 Friday night when it hosted district rival Sumner High and lost 76-65 its rather tall guests.
First-year Panther coach Rob Smith said the differences in the tilt were the number of times the Spartans went to the foul line and the limited number of minutes Bonney Lake’s 6-foot, 6-inch junior Mike Gould played before fouling out.
“Mike spent only a total of nine minutes in the game before fouling out with around five minutes remaining,” Smith said. “In order for us to be successful, Gould has to be in there for the majority of the time, because he is our only tall player.”
“Additionally, we sent Sumner to the foul line nearly 50 times and you aren’t going to win many games when you do that.”
Smith figures some of his team’s troubles will be ironed out by the time league play begins in January.
With Gould cooling his heels on the bench, shouldering the bulk of the scoring load for the Panthers were Nathan Day and Lawrence Williams who contributed 15 points each.
