It is beginning to feel more like summer as we see a rise in temperatures around the Pacific Northwest.

On May 3 you can “Spring Into Summer” at the third annual Family Fitness Fest held at Bonney Lake High School from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The Sumner School District, the city of Bonney Lake and the Bonney Lake Chamber of Commerce are joining forces again to bring awareness to the community regarding health.

This fest began as a way to meet community requirements for the federal grant the Sumner School District received in 2011, Loren Willson, Secondary Curriculum and Professional Development for the district said.

The idea behind the grant was to improve physical education to combat childhood obesity.

This year’s theme “Spring Into Summer” is meant to encourage families to develop a regular plan of physical activity starting now and going through summer until school starts again in the fall, Willson said.

At the fest, there will be demonstrations, safety displays, fitness activities and informational tables hosted by local health service providers, he added.

Some of the providers that will be in attendance are the Sumner-Bonney Lake Recreation Department, the Washington State University Extension gardening program, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, Walmart vision screening and the YMCA.

The event is free and open to the public, Gary Leaf, Facilities and Special Projects Manager for the City of Bonney Lake said.
