Time to fill out those ballots

Ballots for Tuesday’s primary elections should now be at the homes of Pierce County voters.

Ballots for Tuesday’s primary elections should now be at the homes of Pierce County voters.

If a ballot did not arrive in the mail, call the elections division at 253-798-VOTE (8683) or 800-446-4979.

People may cast their vote by mailing their ballot, which must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, or by submitting the ballot in person at a polling location or a drop box. Polling locations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and ballots dropped off need to submitted by 8 p.m. on election day.

Express booths open Friday, Aug. 13. They will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day through Election Day. Drop boxes are available 24 hours a day until 8 p.m. on Election Day.

For the primary elections voters are not required to select a political party. This is a top-two primary, meaning the two candidates who receive the most votes in the primary advance to the November general election, regardless of party affiliation.

Some offices are not listed on the primary election ballot due to Washington state law. Partisan positions are required to be listed on the ballot regardless of the number of candidates, but nonpartisan positions are only required to be listed on the primary ballot if at least three candidates filed for office. This is why the Pierce County Auditor position and some judicial positions are not on the ballot. These positions will be listed on the general election ballot.
