The Sumner High School Drama Department opens 2012 with a production of “Up the Down Staircase,” premiering Thursday at the Performing Arts Center.

The plot of the classic play revolves around Sylvia Barrett, a young idealistic English teacher at an inner-city high school who hopes to nurture her students’ interest in classic literature and writing.

Barrett quickly becomes discouraged during her first year, frustrated by petty bureaucracy, the indifference of her students, and the incompetence of many of her colleagues and decides to leave public school to work in a smaller private setting.

Her mind is changed, however, by the realization that she has indeed touched the lives of her students.

The play is directed by drama teacher Rachel Street. Tickets ate $10 for adults and $6 for seniors and students.

“Up the Down Staircase” is scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 26, 27 and 28 and a matinee performance is scheduled for 2 p.m. Jan. 28. The Performing Arts Center is located at 1707 Main Street, Sumner.
