Sumner High’s baseball squad got a bit of a wake-up call March 31, jeopardizing its unbeaten streak in league play by falling behind 4-2 to the winless Lakes Lancers after three innings of play.
The Spartans shook off the sleep in the very next inning though, scoring six runs in the bottom of that fourth and eventually sailing to a 9-4 triumph.
Thursday, the Spartans hosted beat visiting Franklin Pierce 7-5, despite committing three errors, to elevate their South Puget Sound League 3A mark to 6-0 and their overall record to 9-0.
“I knew we’d be able to compete, but I don’t think any of us expected to be undefeated at this stage of the season,” coach John Welker said.
“I think the guys are starting to believe in themselves a little bit, but after that scare we had against Lakes, have become a bit more humble and have learned that they have to play hard and respect everyone…no matter what their record is,” he said.
Toeing the slab against Franklin Pierce was Cameron Steffey, who was going for his fourth win of the young season as opposed to no losses.
The robust Steffey got the win and his battery mate, senior catcher Alex Sloan, chipped in his usual measure of run support, crushing a three-run round tripper in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting Sumner up for keeps 5-4.
Sumner’s next three outings promise to be the roughest patch of its league schedule.
The Spartans were slated to welcome Bonney Lake Tuesday and today, Wednesday, will travel to White River. The Spartans host another swarm of Hornets in Enumclaw High at 4 p.m. April 14.
