Two Bonney Lake police officers were injured Tuesday when a suspect in a stolen vehicle rammed two police cars and led officers on a chase down state Route 410. One officer was taken to the hospital to treat minor injuries.
The suspect ultimately lost control of his vehicle and was apprehended by police.
One of the officers was transported to the hospital for medical attention and later released, the other was treated and released at the scene.
The suspect man was booked into Pierce County Jail on charges of Taking a Motor Vehicle Without Permission, Eluding, two counts of Hit and Run, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Driving While License Suspended, Possession of Marijuana and a Felony Escape warrant.
Shortly after noon, police attempted to pull over a confirmed stolen vehicle – a Corvette, according to one unconfirmed eyewitness report. Rather than comply, the driver fled and immediately collided into a detective’s unmarked car. He continued westbound on state Route 410 at a high rate of speed, with multiple patrol cars in pursuit.
Near Myers Road, the suspect vehicle struck a sergeant’s car and continued down Elhi Hill at an estimated 80 mph speed.
While the chase descended the hill, the eyewitness reported the driver of the Corvette bailed a handgun out the window. That gun later forced police to block westbound traffic as they brought in investigators to collect the evidence.
As the vehicles reached the straight, flat stretch of land between the 166th Avenue Exit and the Traffic Avenue exit, the vehicle slowed down due to traffic and attempted to exit the highway, at which point officers used the Pursuit Intervention Technique – a controlled collision method – to cause the suspect to spin out and lose control. He attempted to escape a third time but could not due to surrounding patrol cars. He then surrendered and was taken into custody.
Several of the suspect’s charges, including the hit and run and eluding, fall into the category of felony crime.
