Demar Michael Nelson, 27, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for shooting James Guillory Jr., 28, to death in 2010. A jury convicted Nelson of murder in the first degree.

“This is another successful prosecution of a violent gang member by Assistant Chief Criminal Deputy Greg Greer, who leads our gang unit,” said Prosecutor Mark Lindquist.

On Dec. 27, 2008, a fight broke out in the 5400 block of Oakes Street in Tacoma. During the scuffle, Guillory took off his shirt and challenged Nelson to fight him. Nelson pulled out his 9mm handgun and fired 18 shots at Guillory, emptying the magazine. Sixteen of the shots struck Guillory. He died at the scene.
