Sumner’s football team advanced to the No. 1 state seed following a decisive 38-13 victory over North Mason Friday night.

A shadow was cast over the Bulldogs throughout the game, which saw them remain scoreless in the first three quarters.

Meanwhile, the Spartans supplied a steady stream of touchdowns.

Lokahi Kamau made one touchdown in the first quarter on a 36-yard run. The extra point kick was blocked.

The second quarter saw two successful touchdowns by DeJon Lynch and Austin Gregg. Lynch ran 11 yards into the end zone, followed with a successful two-point conversion by Kamau. Gregg caught a pass from Chase Torgison and ran 72 yards into the end zone. Andrew Rumpza made a successful extra point kick.

Gregg followed up in the third quarter with a 21-yard run and Rumpza again kicked in an extra point.

Michael Smith opened the fourth quarter with a 34-yard field goal.

North Mason made two touchdowns and one successful extra point kick in the fourth.

Kamau put a ribbon on the night with a 2-yard run; Rumpza made another extra point kick.

The state football tournament begins Friday and runs through to the Dec. 1 Gridiron Classic. The Spartans take on fellow Sweet 16 contender Kingston High this Friday.
