The Spartans ended the regular season Friday with a win, putting the team in an unusual three-way tie at fourth place and giving it a shot at the district playoffs.
The Spartans are tied with Enumclaw and Lakes with a 3-4 South Puget Sound League 3A record.
The tie breaker will be a 6:30 p.m. two-quarter game between Sumner and Enumclaw at Franklin Pierce Stadium. The game will be played past the press deadline. Check the web for results, www.blscourierherald.com.
The winner of the two-quarter game will play the remaining two quarters against Lakes. The winner of that contest will advance to the district playoffs scheduled for Nov. 7 or 8 against Juanita.
The time and stadium had not been determined by the press deadline.
Sumner finished the regular season Friday beating Auburn Riverside 43-13 at home.
The game started with Sumner scoring the first points of the game.
The Spartans scored a safety with less than five minutes to play in the first quarter.
Sumner took a 9-0 lead to end the first after a eight yard touchdown run by junior running back Josh Riley.
The second quarter started with the Spartans scoring another touchdown less than a minute in.
This score came off a one yard run by sophomore Connor Wedington.
Wedington scored another touchdown, this time from 11 yards out.
The point after by senior kicker Michael Smith was no good.
Sumner led 22-0 midway through the second quarter.
Sumner added to its lead with a 30 yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Chase Torgison to senior running back Austin Ford.
The Spartans were up 29-0.
With 14 seconds to play in the first half, Auburn Riverside got on the board.
The Ravens scored on a 15 yard pass and its two point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
Sumner entered halftime with a 29-6 lead over Auburn Riverside.
The third quarter was all Sumner.
The Spartans scored two more touchdowns, increasing its lead to 43-6.
The first was a three yard run by Riley and the second touchdown of the quarter was a 24 yard run by Wedington.
The fourth quarter was scoreless for Sumner.
But the Ravens scored one last time.
Auburn Riverside scored the final points of the game but it wasn’t enough to catch up to Sumner.
Torgison finished the game four for nine for 86 yards passing.
He threw one interception in the win.
Wedington finished the game as the leading rusher for the Spartans with 20 carries for 138 yards and three touchdowns.
Sophomore tight end Michael Carey finished the game as the Spartans leading receiver. He has one catch for 33 yards.
Sumner finished the regular season with an overall record of 5-4.
Peninsula won the 3A with an undefeated 7-0 conference record. Auburn Mountainview came in second at 6-1 and Auburn third with 5-2.
