Bonney Lake High hit three free throws in the final 74 seconds to secure a 58-56, hard-fought South Puget Sound League 3A victory over White River Friday at home.
Chad Marquez’s free throw broke a 55-all tie, then Riley Baltazar and Nathan Braun each added another to seal the win.
White River’s Chad Sayler had a chance to tie the game with 14.5 second to go, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1.
“Our players earned the win, it wasn’t given to them,” Bonney Lake coach John Hofstrand said. “They earned it.”
White River came out hot, hitting four 3-point baskets in the opening period as Jason Tyler and Billy Kiel hit two apiece.
Braun kept the Panthers in the game early with seven first-quarter points including a 3-pointer as they trailed the Hornets, 22-17, at the end of one.
Both teams slowed the tempo in the second period. Bonney Lake knotted the game for the second time, 24 apiece, on Lee Boggan’s layup, but White River regained the lead on Blake Halverson’s putback.
Sayler’s pair of free throws with 1.5 seconds left in the first half gave the Hornets a 34-30 margin at the half.
Early in the third, Kiel drilled his second of four 3-pointers for a 37-31 lead.
Ramsey Thoms hit his second 3-pointer of the night to pull Bonney Lake to within three, 39-36. Kyle Bobbit scored off a Baltazar steal and Bonney Lake pulled to within one at 41-40.
A Kiel 3-pointer and layup by A.J. Rice put White River up 48-42 with seven minutes to play.
Braun, who had to switch numbers due to blood on his jersey, answered for Bonney Lake with a 3-pointer and a dunk off a steal.
White River was called for a technical foul and Marquez’s free throw tied the game at 48.
Keil went inside for a layup and was fouled. His three-point play gave the Hornets a 51-48 advantage. Braun answered with his third 3-point game of the game with 3:45 to play.
“We gave up 34 points in the first half and we weren’t going to do that again,” Hofstrand said. “Our goal was to keep them under 20 in the second half.”
Braun finished with a game-high 18 points and Thoms hit 12.
Kiel led White River with 15 and Tyler added 14.

The Cardinals finished the game with a 26-18 run.
Bonney Lake, which had four players in double figures, took a 36-30 lead into intermission.
Marquez’s 3-point basket gave the Panthers a 10-point lead, 53-43, late in the third period. The Cardinals answered with six straight points before Baltazar drilled a 3-pointer for a seven-point margin.
Marquez led Bonney Lake with 19 points, while Thoms and Braun hit 15 each and Baltazar added 13.
