Maple Lawn elementary students did more than just Trick-or-Treat for candy on Halloween; they also raised more than $1,200 for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund or UNICEF.

Maple Lawn student Ilee and her classmates read in a Time for Kid’s article about UNICEF during class last October. Ilee and her classmate Emmett did some research on UNICEF and presented their information to their class.

“It took off from there,” said Jeanne Ossman, Ilee’s teacher. “The third graders ignited the rest of the project. All I did was order the boxes.”

Ossman ordered 300 boxes to pass out to the whole school, but soon found out 300 boxes were not nearly enough. “We had to use soup cans to collect the rest,” Ossman said, gesturing to an empty, clean soup can with a printed UNICEF label around it.

The school’s goal was to raise enough money to install a fresh water pump for a village, which UNICEF reported cost around $500. Instead of one water pump, the school raised enough money to install two, and the leftover money went to purchase a bike for delivering medication and several hundred vaccines. UNICEF said that $10 helps vaccinate 280 children.

Ilee raised $112.98 with the help of her family and friends.

“I feel good about what I did,” she said. “I didn’t realize that I could actually help somebody around the world. I didn’t think that could be a possibility.”
