The drains of several Bonney Lake neighborhoods got new warnings against dumping this summer, thanks to projects from a pair of local Eagle Scout candidates.
Logen Bergerud and Cameron Gehrke spent parts of their summer labeling storm drains to warn residents not to dump into them because they drain into streams and other fish habitats.
“There has been a problem in some neighborhoods with people dumping things they shouldn’t be dumping down the storm drain,” Bergerud, 15, said.
Bergerud said he hopes the labels he and his crew placed on 198 drains in the Brookfield and Spiraea Glen developments will cause people to “stop and think” about where the drains ultimately end up before they dump into them.
Gehrke, 17, and his crew labeled drains in the Springhaven, Ptarmingan Ridge, and GMG neighborhoods.
“We are trying to keep our waters clean not only for the habitat, but also the recreational activity that we all enjoy,” Gehrke said in an email.
Both teens are longtime members of the Boy Scouts, now closing in on the organization’s highest honor.
“Eagle scout has been a goal of mine,” Bergerud said, adding that he first joined the Cub Scouts at age 8.
Bergerud said it “feels awesome” to be this close to meeting his goal, which now requires only a board review.
Gehrke also spoke highly of his time in the Boy Scouts.
“I have been a Scout since I was 12 years old. Our troop is very active with great leaders. I have had the opportunity to hike in the Olympic Mountains, kayak in the San Juan Islands, make snow caves on Mt. Rainier, and go to all the forts that make up the Triangle of Death to learn orienteering,” he said in an email. “All of this fun has been an awesome adventure.”
