Bonney Lake days coming this weekend

The city may have shortened Bonney Lake Days due to budget concerns, but according to organizers this year’s event still packs in the fun.

“Everything we’ve done on Saturday and Sunday in the past is all crammed into Saturday,” Events Coordinator David Wells said in an interview earlier this year.

In previous years, Bonney Lake Days was spread across a full weekend, but in the wake of furloughs and other budget-cutting measures being necessary to keep the city afloat, the event was modified to essentially a single day.

Scheduled for Saturday, this year’s happening includes all of the familiar events, from a fun run to a parade and car show and skateboard competition. There will be musical acts and stage performances and, of course, more than 100 vendors, including the beer garden, which this year is sponsored by Dinners Done Right.

Many of the traditional performers will be back on stage this year, from Michelle’s Studio of Dance to Roach Gymnastics, as well as expected performances from local martial arts studios and other dance groups.

This year’s headlining act will be Shelly and the Curves, a Seattle-based group that has won KING 5’s Best of Western Washington’s “Best Wedding/Party Band” category two years in a row.

According to Wells, the city scheduled one of its Friday Night Flix for the night before Bonney Lake Days, to help kick off the event with a free showing of “Monsters vs. Aliens” at Allan Yorke Park.

Tonight’s Tunes at Tapps performance featuring The Beatniks is also being considered part of the weekend’s events.

Wells said last year’s event drew approximately 2,000 people on Saturday, but he expects more this year because it will be a single day.

“Bonney Lake Days is a chance for the community to come together and watch some local entertainment and visit some local vendors,” Wells said.
