Surfliner overhauled Songandabullet in the closing strides and notched a big upset Sunday in the $12,700 Les Schwab Purse for 3-year-olds and up at Emerald Downs. Ridden by Javier Matias, Surfliner ran one mile in 1:37.04 and paid $34.80, $11.40 and $6.40. Steve Koler is the winning trainer for Jack Zaborac, the longtime proprietor of Kent Bowl who celebrated his 89th birthday Sunday with a victory.
A 5-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding by Silver Train, Surfliner has consistently outrun his odds, scoring wins at 23-to-1 and 16-to-1 and seconds at 11-to-1 and 10-to-1.
Sunday, Surfliner was last early, as Hard Slider led Songandabullet through fractions of :23.97, :47.81 and 1:11.99. Songandabullet, bidding for his fourth victory of the meet, drew 2 ½ lengths clear into the lane, but Surfliner responded to steady urging and wore down the leader for a 1 ¼-length victory.
Songandabullet, ridden by David G. Lopez, held second and paid $5.40 and $4.20 for place and show.
Somewhere With You, ridden by Jose Zunino, was three lengths back in third and paid $4. Jack the Pirate, Hard Slider, Sportive and Assessment completed the order of finish.
Long shots dominated Sunday’s nine-race card. In an oddity, five winners*Sharp Focus ($14.40), Regazze Cat ($15.20), Snow Bunny ($14.20) and Sollovino ($15.60) and Brilliant Thought*all won at odds of 6-to-1.
