It began five years ago with a group of city employees who simply wanted to play a round of golf together; they coordinated a vacation day and gradually, their friends and family began joining in the fun. It was a natural progression to combine it with fundraising, said Communications Director Carmen Palmer. Now, the annual Golf for Life tournament has grown into the city’s biggest fundraiser for their Relay for Life team, which directly benefits the American Cancer Society.
“Although the funds go to a very serious and important cause, the day itself is a lot of fun,” said Palmer.
Last year, the city raised nearly $10,000 at the tournament and Palmer hopes this year will result in an even larger contribution. Each golfer pays an $80 registration fee, which includes 18-holes and a golf cart. Non-golfers can participate for a smaller $20 fee. Additional sponsor-themed putting and hitting competitions can be entered as well. For example, the Chipping Challenge involves a dumpster donated by DM Disposal and costs $5 for 10 tries.
“We like to have a lot of fun celebrating all the people and businesses who are part of this,” said Palmer. “Last year, we put out an entire living room set from The Old Cannery. Golfers enjoyed the recliners while they waited to tee off!”
Lunch and dinner will be catered by Branks BBQ. Beverages, including beer from Northwest Brewing Co., will be sponsored by the Puyallup/Sumner Chamber of Commerce. In addition to free flowing food and drinks, many prizes will be available. Prizes include a round of golf at Chambers Bay, a Keurig – donated by Green Mt. Coffee Roasters – and much more.
Golf for Life is sponsored by DM Disposal, Harborstone Credit Union, KPG, Parametrix, UW Tacoma Milgard School of Business, Blooms at the Windmill, Dillanos, Berger ABAM and others.
The Golf for Life tournament will take place Friday, August 9 at Sumner Meadows Golf Links, 14802 Golf Links Drive. At the time of press, there were still spots available. For questions and registration details, please visit the Golf for Life website.
