From a Washington State Patrol press release:

On Saturday, August 4th, at 4:06 a.m. in the morning, the Washington State Patrol began receiving 911 calls reporting a serious collision involving a single vehicle that was fully engulfed in flames in the median of southbound I-5 in Federal Way.

Troopers believe that at in the early morning of August 4th a 2003 BMW 330 was traveling southbound on I-5 when it left the roadway to the left, entering the grass median. The BMW struck the DOT concrete junction box and sign support column and immediately caught fire.  The driver, a 21-year-old Fort Lewis man who suffered injuries to his legs in the crash, was able to get himself out of the burning vehicle and remove his passenger, a 29-year-old female, before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. The female was taken to Harborview Medical Center where she is being treated for severe internal injuries.

The male driver, whom was placed under arrest for vehicular assault, was transported to St. Francis Medical Center and is currently listed in stable condition.

High speeds and alcohol are being investigated as potential factors in this collision.
