The Bonney Lake golf teams shared victory and defeat, after meeting with their first two rivals of the year, Lakes and Enumclaw high schools.

The Panthers’ girls golf team tore up Oakbrook Golf and Country Club’s course, winning out over an unfortunately hindered Lakes 116-55.

Lakes came into the match with five players to Bonney Lake’s six. But the team was also hobbled by higher stroke counts per golfer: a little more than 63, compared to Bonney Lake’s average of just over 53.

Junior Desirae Hazelwood was the golfer to beat and the medalist of the match, with the low stroke count of 44 – 8 over par 36, and was awarded 28 points.

But at the home game against top-ranked Enumclaw, the girls narrowly lost 137-125.

The medalist for that match was the Hornets’ Tiffany Wilkening.

The boys team’s 52-39 victory against Lakes was made sweeter by comparison to the team’s performance in the 2010 season.

“We didn’t win a match last year,” coach J.D. Rushton said. “So it was great to start this season with a win.”

Senior Josh Journey was the medalist, with 40 strokes and 14 points.

The subsequent Thursday’s 87-60 loss to Enumclaw was disappointing, Rushton said, but the boys nevertheless exceeded a goal they had set for themselves.

“We set a goal to earn 52 points at a home game,” Rushton said. “And we met that.”

Sophomore Kash Kolterman was the team’s top performer with 37 strokes and 17 points. He was followed by Journey, and sophomore Jacob Rash.

The golfers teed off against Peninsula Tuesday, results came to late to be included here, but will be available online. A home match against Auburn Mountainview is scheduled for Thursday. The Panthers were scheduled to play a nonleague rivalry game against Sumner Sept. 7, but the game was cancelled and rescheduled for today, Wednesday, at High Cedars Golf Course in Orting at 2:45 p.m.
