EMBEZZLEMENT: A Sumner detective spent several months investigating an incident of theft originally reported March 10. The subject had served as the treasurer of a homeowner‘s association for several years until the point that his home was foreclosed by the bank and he was forced to move. After he resigned his post he refused to turn over financial records that he maintained as treasurer. With the assistance of the police department, it was discovered the subject had been gleaning money from the HOA account for several years for his own use, which he later claimed was to keep his home out of foreclosure. As best as could be determined, the subject had taken a total of $11,307 from the HOA account. Apparently the subject was well-liked, had lived at the village for many years and had no criminal history. Their board of directors did not wish to see the subject held criminally liable and showed some empathy given his financial situation and also acknowledged some fault in that for the length of the subject’s time in service as treasurer, no one from the executive board audited or otherwise checked his accounting practices. The subject repaid the full amount stolen and the association dropped the criminal charges.
SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY: At approximately 3 a.m. July 7, police responded to a report of suspicious subjects pulling on door handles of vehicles in the parking lot at the 1600 block of Valley Avenue. Two juvenile males were found walking away from the scene with property that did not belong to them. After investigating, police established that the items were stolen from a vehicle nearby and there had been three other prowls in the area. There had also been an attempt to steal one of the vehicles. One subject was booked into the Puyallup jail for obstructing a public servant and vehicle prowl. Another subject’s charge of vehicle prowl was forwarded to Remann Hall.
