At its May meeting, the Pierce County Library System Board of Trustees will discuss initiatives for the Urban Libraries Council Top Innovators award, learning through summer reading, Tillicum Library’s partnership with the community center, and more. The board meets from 3:30 to 6 p.m. on May 14 at the library’s Processing and Administrative Center, 3005 112th St. E., in Tacoma. Download the agenda.
Initiatives submitted for Urban Libraries Council Top Innovators award
Each year the Urban Libraries Council asks libraries to share innovative work and programs that benefit individuals and communities. Pierce County Library System (PCLS) received the Top Innovator award in the literacy category in 2011, and an Honorable Mention in the operations category in 2013. This year PCLS has submitted three entries: Annual Branch Service Plans, Affordable Care in Pierce County and Project B.L.O.C.K.S. Blocks Let Our Children Know Science. The awards will be announced on June 23 at the NEXT Library Conference in Chicago.
Summer reading helps children continue learning
The library’s summer reading program provides the only free summer learning opportunities available to every student. The 2014 program offers a wide selection of reading materials and more than 300 free events from June 21 through Aug. 31. The theme—Fizz Boom Read—focuses on learning in the important area of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).
Library partners with Tillicum community organizations to provide ongoing services
Recent articles in The News Tribune reported on funding issues at the Tillicum Community Center. At this point, the news has no impact on the Tillicum Library, located at the front entrance of the building. It is the library’s understanding the Tillicum Community Center will remain open while the Board searches for other funding sources. PCLS will participate with community service providers to create a plan of action for next steps.
