Winter driving preparedness | Washington State Patrol

With the onset of freezing temperatures and the possibility of snow, please remember to clear off all your windows of frost or snow before you drive. Improved visibility will provide the driver a greater opportunity to respond to the environment around them. A good set of wipers, properly inflated winter tires and patience is needed to safely operate a vehicle during hazardous winter driving conditions.

As winter descends on Washington, now is the time to make sure you and your vehicle are prepared.

Remember to slow down, increase your following distance and give yourself additional time to get to your destination. Snow and ice covered roads greatly decrease your ability to slow and stop your vehicle so be prepared.

It is important to be prepared for bad weather and the potential for long delays if traveling the mountain passes. Stock your car with basic winter driving equipment: a scraper, shovel, jumper cables or jump pack, tow chain/rope, and traction devices. It’s also important to have proper boots and clothing for the cold conditions.

Please check out the road and weather conditions at WSDOT’s website or by calling 1-800-695-ROAD before you travel.
