The competitions of the 2012 Olympics have raged on in rainy old London, but few may be aware of the battles for golden glory happening right in Sumner.
Every two years, the Franklin House retirement community hosts its own Olympic games in parallel with the official competition. Residents vie for gold, silver and bronze, in events such as “archery” (a corn hole toss), “sprinting” (yarn winding), golf and “javelin” (blowing straw wrappers off a straw for greatest distance).
Sometimes the results can be surprising: one man, with eyesight so diminished he can almost be declared legally blind, took silver in the corn hole toss. And the silver medalist in “javelin” was a woman with greatly diminished lung capacity.
“It just goes to show, anything can happen at the Olympics,” Residence Director Dale Chang said.
Beijing Olympian Melanie Roach will be on hand for tomorrow’s closing ceremonies, where competitors will be awarded their medals. Roach will present a handmade quilt to the winner of a raffle.
